White Filling Instructions
Your white filling is as hard as it will be when you leave the office. Immediately following the appointment, you can brush, floss and chew normally. However, if you were numbed for the procedure, you should avoid chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off.
It is normal to experience some sensitivity to heat, cold, sweets and pressure after your appointment. It is normal for this sensitivity to last for a couple of days to several weeks after treatment, then will gradually subside. If the sensitivity worsens, let us know right away. (Usually, the deeper the cavity, the more sensitive the tooth will be.)
If you feel that you are hitting high on the filling or your bite feels uneven, please call our office so we can make a quick adjustment to the filling. Don't assume your bite will get better with time, the tooth may become irritated and it will result in a toothache.
The filling may be contoured differently and have a different texture than your original tooth or restoration. Your tongue may magnify this slight difference and you should become accustomed to the new feel in a few days. If not, please call the office.
"Silver (Amalgam) Fillings" Instructions
Avoid chewing on the side you had silver fillings for 24 hours, as it takes 24 hours for fillings to set completely and filling can break during initial 24 hours. Also avoid extreme hot and cold for a few days as there is always a possibility of experienceing some sensitivity after the filling is placed. This will settle down after a couple of days, however, if it does not subside, let us know right away so we can take care of it. If you were numbed for the procedure, you should avoid chewing and beverages until the numbness has completely worn off.
